Fruit and vegetable cold storage — conservation by variety

Every family of fruit and vegetable has its own ideal temperature and humidity band. Our catalogue offers configurations tailored by use: orchard, diversified market gardening, wholesale trade, and direct sales.

An essential application in the agricultural mix. Many smaller market gardeners and orchards want a simple storage solution, eligible for EU rural development funding, without building a full masonry room on the holding.

Key features

What your trade needs

Storage table by variety

Documentation included with the quotation: optimal temperature and humidity table by fruit and vegetable. To plan your rotation and avoid harmful pairings (ethylene).

Ultrasonic humidifier for 90–95 % RH

Essential for leafy vegetables and some sensitive fruit. Cuts weight loss in storage from 8–12 % down to under 3 % over time.

Gentle ventilation, no turbulence

Gentle-defrost evaporator plus controlled airflow. Prevents drying and enzymatic browning of fragile produce.

Mind the ethylene — climacteric fruit

Some fruit produce ethylene as they ripen (apples, pears, bananas, avocados, tomatoes, kiwis). Ethylene speeds up the ripening of nearby fruit. The upshot: don't store apples and carrots in the same room (the carrots turn bitter), and don't store apples and potatoes together (the potatoes sprout). Our removable internal partition lets you create two separate zones in a single container when you have these conflicts.

Controlled ripening versus simple storage

Two distinct uses. Simple storage: harvested produce you just want to keep as long as possible (apples in ventilated cold for up to nine months). Controlled ripening: produce picked green (bananas, tomatoes, avocados) that you ripen gradually at a precise temperature (+15–18 °C with controlled ethylene dosing for bananas). Our catalogue covers storage. Controlled ripening needs more specialist equipment — to discuss in the quotation if that is your need.

Suitable configurations

Compact format · 10 m³

10m3 Cold Room — Compact, Movable R290 Unit

The 10 m³ (roughly 350 cu ft) is our entry point: the most compact small cold room that still works as a genuine professional unit. It arrives pre-charged with R290, runs on a standard 230 V single-phase supply, and can be sited almost anywhere without a heavy concrete slab. A best-seller for game-hunting groups, small butchers, florists and restaurants on temporary premises.

Core of the range · 20 m³

20m3 Cold Room — The R290 Core of the Range

The 20 m³ (roughly 700 cu ft) is our best-seller. It has the capacity for a wholesale butcher, an active hunting syndicate, a mid-sized restaurant or a market garden handling post-harvest stock. Pre-charged with R290, 100 mm PIR insulation, 400 V three-phase. This is the format where the cost per m³ is at its best.

R290 pre-charge limit · 30 m³

30m3 Cold Room — The Limit of R290 Pre-Charge

30 m³ (roughly 1,060 cu ft) is the boundary of our pre-charged R290 catalogue. It is the format for farms handling post-harvest stock, caterers with large seasonal volumes, wholesale butchers and shared hunting estates. Above this point we switch to empty delivery, with the unit charged on site by a certified F-Gas engineer.

Questions fréquentes

Can all fruit and vegetables go in together?

No, because of ethylene and the different temperature and humidity bands. A practical rule: separate climacteric produce (apples, pears, tomatoes, avocados) from the rest (leafy vegetables, berries, citrus). For a diversified market gardener, plan a dual-zone room — it is designed for this. Our storage table sets out the compatibilities.

How long do apples keep in cold storage?

Storage varieties (Granny Smith and similar long-keepers): 6–9 months at 0 °C / 90 % RH. Mid-season varieties (Golden, Gala): 3–5 months. Early-picked varieties: 2–3 months at most. Controlled-atmosphere storage (ultra-low oxygen) can double these durations but needs specialist equipment outside the ecofrost catalogue.
